To turn off multitasking:
Settings >General >Multitasking >toggle off "Allow Multiple Apps"
Currently Slide Over is an iPad-only feature. See model compatibility info for iOS 9.x at this link:

I thought that might be the case --- But ...
1. I was under the impression this iPad (iPad Mini 2 (2014)) was old enough that it couldn't support multitasking. I see no other evidence that any of the multitasking functions is available.2. Our other iOS devices don't do the same thing ... even thought two of them (iPhones 6 and 6+) are less than a year old.
Anyway, all this misses the point. I do not EVER start the Calendar app – I do not want it ever to start. It appears in the list of running apps ONLY when I swipe from the right edge – I don't want it to.
Why is it starting at all? How do I make it not ever start on its own (or from a Slide Over)?
Many thanks

Ever since upgrading to iOS 9 (I think), I've been getting a very annoying unwanted appearance of the Calendar. In many (all?) apps, when I swipe from too near the right edge of the screen, I don't get action on the app I'm using but rather the Calendar appears running down the right edge of the screen – even though the Calendar was not open before. To get back to what I wanted to do, I have to swipe the Calendar off the right – And now the Calendar IS open. This happens on only the iPad Mini; not the other iPad (2013) we have, or either iPhone 6, all of which are running the same iOS version. Does anyone have a clue what's going on? I assume it's some setting I have on the Mini, but looking at everything I can think of, I haven't found the culprit. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
