POP is a recieving protocol, SMTP a sending, your maybe referring to POP vs IMAP?

My slower trusty laptop uses Windows Live Mail 2011, incoming mail is POP3, and outgoing SMTP. I see on my iPad Mail program incoming is IMAP and outgoing SMTP. What's the difference?
