Pop is older. SMTP allows for sync. Use that if you can.

My slower trusty laptop uses Windows Live Mail 2011, incoming mail is POP3, and outgoing SMTP. I see on my iPad Mail program incoming is IMAP and outgoing SMTP. What's the difference?
