A car is NOT, itself, someone's intellectual property.
A song, a painting, a drawing, a movie … IS.

You can buy a painting from someone, and all you get is the painting, not the right to reproduce it. You will pay the artist an agreed-upon price.

Or you can hire an artist to perform "work-for-hire" (a legal "term of art") which will give you a painting, and also whatever rights you have agreed with the artist to receive. This price, for a typical work of art, will be much higher than the cost of simply buying painting.

If you want simply to download an MP3 so you can enjoy listening to it at your leisure, you can do that for cheap. But if you want to acquire all of the reproduction rights, you'll have to pay a huge amount more.

The problem is that most people are both greedy and cheap.
