The only good solution to iOS8 is an A8X chip.  Sigh.  Buy or die.

My 5S has an A7.
iOS 8, 8.0.1, 8.0.2, 8.1, 8.1.1, and now 8.1.2 have all run fine on this phone.

Also on my iPad 4.
