It is a good name, and good marketing. iPad, New iPad, then another new iPad is confusing, and while numbers are boring compared to a name like the Air, I assume the next one will be the New iPad Air or maybe iPad Air 2 more likely.

Air is definitely a distinguishable name. It's pretty hard for me to call this the iPad 5 when iPad Air works better. In fact, this is much better than "The New iPad" or "iPad with Retina Display", which you just wanted to attach a number to.
