According to my understanding, and my experience, this answer is incorrect.
My impression is that the App Store on my devices only show updates for Apps that are physically present on the device.
I certainly have plenty of Apps on my computer, in iTunes, that I do not have on my iPhone, or on my iPad, for which I receive update notices IN iTunes, but NOT on the iPhone, or on the iPad.
