What I do, when I am finished reading for awhile, is to set a bookmark. Then when i want to stary reading again I just go to the last bookmark, and delete it.
Although, my Kindle app seems to get me to the right spot.
Sometimes I will look ahead, like to a bibliography or notes, and so the sync becomes useless then.

I was having syncing problems and here is how I resolved. When I finish
reading I don't leave the book open I go to the library page (home) and
press the sync button. It is a pain and takes extra steps but I am usually
only a paragraph or two, depending on formatting within apps, away from
where I stopped.
I haven't tried the audiobook sync yet, I have about 5 books that have this
option but haven't tried it.
