Kickstarter is not a preorder system. It is a system that allow those
with ideas (and not enough money) to present their idea to those who
have money. Those with the ideas get to get money without giving up
ownership in their idea. Those with the money, potentially can get the
fruits of the idea at a reduced price.
The problem is that there is a huge risk that the idea may never
develop into an actual produce or it may not be exactly as hoped by
the creator or the monetary contributor.
There have been some products that have never come to market, but most
do. Usually these ideas are the mastermind of a single person or very
small group. If something happens to that person, the whole project
could be scrapped or delayed indefinitely.
You are not investing nor preordering, but simply buying into an idea
that potentially may not be realized.
I have gotten my rewards from a least 5 ideas. Only one was not what I
hoped over the long run. The ipad case that was provided worked as
advertised, but the leather cover began to away from the metal plates
due to the glue used.
