Pete,
You are looking at this in the wrong way from the point of view of those who are interested in Kickstarter. They are not interested in making money or saving money. They are "investing" in having a product have a chance to become reality. Their payback is not in money but in the satisfaction of the product coming to the marketplace.
For those who are interesting in making money or saving money Kickstarter is not the place to go.

The Kickstarter investors aren't really investors the way that venture
capitalists are investors who (it is to be hoped) not only get their
initial investment back but also make a large profit.
Kickstarter investors put up the money for an item or a service up
front, hoping that the project will attain "critical mass" and will be
able to proceed. Usually in return for investing in a kickstarter
project a person will receive the product for a reduced price from what
the public will pay once the product is available, or the investor might
receive an added perc which is not available to the public, such as a
special color or special engraving so some such personalization.
But a kickstarter investor, at least those I've participated in (all of
which have come to fruition and been worth the investment and the wait),
doesn't expect nor receive an investment. That would bring down the
Securities and Exchange Commission on the heads of the poor souls trying
to get crowd funding for their products.
