Maybe you don't need to back up as much as you think.
Google backs up all my mail and photos for free so I don't need to use iCloud for that.
Apple has all the apps, books and music so I don't worry about them either. They can be recovered. I use iCloud to back up my contacts, calendar & notes and that's about it. If you have some apps with personal data on them then back those up on iCloud. The other apps don't need to be backed up on iCloud. You can forward things like PDF's to your mailbox and recover them later.
