I consider any icons and visuals that would look ok on a Hercules Black and White monitor atrocious. My Nexus 10 has "stick figure" soft buttons on the bottom and they are awful.

My disgust for Windows 8 was how drab and flat and mono the icons and dialogs looked. Humans even if they think things are too colorful or disagree with a picture chosen on the whole statistically recognize complex colorful icons - since they look strongly different from each other.

I also think Words help so in an ideal world one would have options for text below icons. When I used to teach the Visual Basic IDE it was so clumsy to say "click the icon that looks like ___" the better IDEs have labels below their icons that can be toggled on and off.

Now the rumor is that Apple wants to go back to that time? Unless there's a VERY good reason for it, I think Apple would be making a big mistake.

I wonder what their reasoning is in changing the appearance of the icons.

Certainly it can't be simply to emulate Windows8, especially since Win8
isn't such a huge success. I wonder if changing the appearance of the
icons helps improve battery life (can't understand why it would, but
then I don't understand a lot about this technology) or if they occupy
less storage space and therefore make more space available for other
purposes and/or simply speed up things.

In any event, trading elegance for boredom certainly doesn't sound like
an easily made decision.
