Trading elegance for boredom is a step back in time. Some of us on here remember the first animated gifs, so you'll most likely remember not too long before that when icons were boring. Now the rumor is that Apple wants to go back to that time? Unless there's a VERY good reason for it, I think Apple would be making a big mistake.

I wonder what their reasoning is in changing the appearance of the icons.

Certainly it can't be simply to emulate Windows8, especially since Win8
isn't such a huge success. I wonder if changing the appearance of the
icons helps improve battery life (can't understand why it would, but
then I don't understand a lot about this technology) or if they occupy
less storage space and therefore make more space available for other
purposes and/or simply speed up things.

In any event, trading elegance for boredom certainly doesn't sound like
an easily made decision.
