Re: [iPad] Tim Cook Statement on Maps App

Yeah, I think it is like you have a choice of filet mignon or lobster every night, then all of a sudden you can choose from hamburger steak or chicken fingers. LOL

The fact is, Ted,  that Apple, being the stickler for perfection that they have been,  should never have released this incomplete app to begin with.   Yes,  given time I expect they will vastly improve.  How much, I don't know,  and how long I don't know.  Google took years to get where they are.

But good maps or bad,  still doesn't address the lack of features many feel are indispensible.   Street view is one.  For travelers looking for a particular store front,  or dirt road in the country,  this feature was key.   Topography in the Google maps was another I sorely miss.     Sadly,  Apple doesn't have these,  which is why I eagerly await Google's  iPad app.

They're not poor for everyone and they need data to correct them for people who have issues.

The SF Bay Area maps are really good.

I really get the feeling that no matter what Apple does, some people want Google maps. <shrug>

What I don't understand is why Apple didn't deactivate Maps until they were tweaked.  They certainly knew they were poor.  One would think anyway.

Yep.  It's called spin control.  However,  with Apple,  I expect they will deliver.  I certainly hope so.

Heres Tim

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from theApp Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Tim Cook
Apple's CEO

Perhaps a fix for many of the customer complaints will surface soon after this statement by Mr. Cook:
