Re: [iPad] Re: Tim Cook Statement on Maps App

Paper maps weren't expected to have flaws, but they were created in a time when products and projects were done much more slowly and carefully than they are today. On the other hand, we probably have much better capabilities now for preventing flaws.  But we rush, anyway, and things are always failing.  Human beings seem doomed to be sloppy.  Except for the Germans.

Every once in a while it hits me how incredible the maps, gps, instant directions from point a to b really are.  And here we are complaining because the system isn't perfect!  Let's not lose sight of the fact that a few short years ago all we had were paper maps.  Remember trying to navigate in a darkened car relying on them?  (led to a lot of driver/navigator conflict in my family.)

Perhaps remembering the bad old days will make us all a little more tolerant and patient with imperfections in current apps, Apple's included.  Personally I have had good luck with Mapquest for driving and walking.   Other folks have their favorites.  I have only experimented briefly with the new iOS 6 Maps.  I think Apple's system will ultimately kick some serious butt.  Until then, use another app if the new Maps is deficient in your area.

And think back to wrestling with paper maps. (Shudder)  I guarantee you'll feel better.  :-)

Ed, I hear you, but do you expect Apple to have the best of eveything?

If the new Maps did not have the fault that some are getting so as to show inaccuraccies, many would be very pleased. Those others that want features that only Google Maps have, can use Google Maps. You can have your cake and eat it too.

Why is the Apple Video app not supporting other file formats? It doesn't. I now use another video app as well, easily fixed.

May are fine with Maps, many are fine with the default Video app. If you want more features, there are apps to add to cater for that.

The fact is, Ted,  that Apple, being the stickler for perfection that they have been,  should never have released this incomplete app to begin with.   Yes,  given time I expect they will vastly improve.  How much, I don't know,  and how long I don't know.  Google took years to get where they are.

But good maps or bad,  still doesn't address the lack of features many feel are indispensible.   Street view is one.  For travelers looking for a particular store front,  or dirt road in the country,  this feature was key.   Topography in the Google maps was another I sorely miss.     Sadly,  Apple doesn't have these,  which is why I eagerly await Google's  iPad app.
