Should behave the same. I'm not sure what apps they are but maybe the are running in the background. I suspect we are just not communicating well. I suspect everything is normal...

I did Murray. I "pushed" that minus on about a 1/2 dozen icon and they all disappeared. I went back to read some mail. Only mail I didn't run any of the  deleted icons. Then I double clicked the home button twice to see the shelf and all of the formerly gone/deleted icons we back. 
One other thing I am on the first gen iPad but with iOS5. Would the first gen behave differently?

I double clicked the home button then held on icon until the jiggled. Then I pressed the minos bar and the disappeared. I thought that was ass I had to do to only have the recently used apps showing. But the are all back. Did I miss a step?
