I think the confusion has to do with the expression, "WiFi."  The Direct Mode creates its own WiFi network.  This is stated right on the site.  So when you say you still require WiFi, this implies to many people that you have to have an external hotspot to connect with before it will work, and this isn't the case.  The card WILL use an external hotspot is there is one around, but if there isn't, then it uses the Direct Mode AS its WiFi.  I hope this makes sense.

An Eye-Fi card is a Wifi SD card.
OF COURSE you still require Wifi.

No Wifi beyond the card, and the iPad or laptop, is needed for this mode.
