I was at the main site and listed under requirements for each card--Connect X2, Mobile X2 and Pro x2-- it says this:
"A Wi-Fi router compatible with 802.11b/g/n on the 2.4GHz band. Note: 5 GHz band is not supported."
The site also says this under Features: "Wireless. Upload photos & videos from your camera through your Wi-Fi network with unprecedented wireless performance thanks to built-in 802.11n technology."
In the iOS app section it says this: "Share on-the-go. The Eye-Fi app can use your iPhone or iPad's data connection (EDGE, 3G or Wi-Fi) to wirelessly upload your photos to the web – there's 45 websites to choose from." That suggests you require an existing WiFi connection to wirelessly upload images.
They really need to clarify things and make the built-in capabilities more clear. As it is now, one can rightfully assume their products are not as feature rich as apparently they are and you require a WiFi connection to use their products. Certainly nothing to suggest the card contains a router.

I agree that their web site doesn't make things very clear. Until I can figure out how to get Avira, my anti-virus program, to stop blocking the set-up of the Direct Mode network, I can't really tell you about whether or not you can only upload images, but I have the impression that it's the case. Here's a link to their support: http://support.eye.fi Maybe you will be able to find more information here. If I can't get this direct mode working soon, I'm going to also use something else.Carlee
