Books also range from free, to .99c (i miss the cent sign), to 9.99. I have only spent more than 9.99 on an ebook once or twice.

Did you plot the number of new apps loaded every quarter? The percentage seems to be going down.

Books are not as bit a part of Apple's income stream as applications. I do not see any reason why you would say apps are plateauing. Whay do you say that, care to elaborate a tad?
