David,
Thank you for the information you provided, below. I will look and
consider. The "stumbling block" issue is whether or not I really need such
an app. I have yet to find a spot where my Verizon 3G coverage did not
provide the map updates I needed as any particular time. However, I can
anticipate that happening some time, and it would be nice to have maps
available when off line. I will strongly consider your suggestions.
Thanks, again.

The app "You Need A Map" or any of its three companion mapping programs
Scenic USA East, Scenic USA Central, Scenic USA West. The last three are
huge apps since they contain very minute elevation data along with the
standard mapping details of roads, rivers, cities, etc. You Need A Map
covers the entire USA but doesn't go down to the same level of terrain
detail as the other three programs.
They all can use the iPad's GPS to locate you. Since I don't have the 3G
model iPad I haven't investigated how good they are at routing you to a
destination. So don't buy them just on my say-so but do some more research
to see if they will do what you want/need.
I'm not sure why paying $50 for a GPS app that takes the place of a $150 or
higher device is such a stumbling block, though.
