I believe when you open them iBooks they are copied out of Dropbox. To get the Steve jobs bio on my iPad I placed the file in my website folder and went to safari on my iPad to browse there and click the file to add it. Maybe Dropbox will work the same.

My concern is that dropbox has limited capacity. I'm wanting to store files that are in dropbox on the drive on my iPad thus freeing up space in dropbox.

do you have iBooks on your iPad?  Dropbox gives you the option to open in ibooks.

Not quite sure what you mean by moving them to the drive of the ipad.  You can open them and read them from Dropbox or iBooks.

I'm an absolute newbie to an iPad1. I have several PDF files uploaded to Dropbox. I have Dropbox installed on my iPad.
 
How do I move them from Drobox to the drive on my iPad. I have the 64 meg version.
