I was going to post that opinion, too. There are always rumors about
the next version of hardware, but smart companies won't make
announcements until they are nearing the end of the first production run
and know they will actually have hardware to sell shortly after the
announcement.
The iPad2 came out in what, March or April of this year? The original
iPad came out at about the same time a year earlier. So one could
conclude that the iPad3 might come out in March or April of 2012, but
there's only guesswork behind that sort of statement.
And I've always believed that holding off on a tech hardware purchase
because of the promise of something better right around the corner only
leads to frustration because it's not always that much better but once
it comes out it's harder to buy the earlier version.
I bought my iPad1 last December, knowing that iPad2 would be out in
Spring of this year. I didn't want to wait those extra months because I
had a specific use I wanted to put the iPad to work with (reading music,
serving as an electronic music stand as well as being a single-device
ebook reader, reference work, atlas, game machine). And I knew it could
do all that very well in the first version. So I bought it and enjoyed
it and the release of iPad2, which my wife bought a couple of months
ago, has done nothing to diminish my enjoyment nor my use of my iPad1.
So my advice to Kriss is to go ahead and make your planned purchase now,
if it fits your budget and you can buy a device with enough storage for
your needs. I don't think you'll regret it -- I see nothing about my
wife's iPad2 that makes me regret my iPad1 purchase or makes me want to
rush out and buy one for myself.
