I don't understand... I can use my iPad 1 as a scanner, somehow? I tried the "hold the home button and on/off switch simultaneously," and all I got was the "Power Off" option.

I don't know how to save in PDF format...but here is a trick that's just about as useful. When you have the receipt or whatever on your iPad screen, simultaneously press the home button and the On/off button for about one second. You'll see a quick flash, and then you'll find that a snapshot of your receipt has been added to your photo album.
