At a high level:

First, you would either need a second hard drive, or you will need to split your existing hard drive into two or more partitions, using Disk Utility  (in the Utilities folder.)
Then you would need to download an application, such as Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of your original disk.
This will give you two bootable disks, both on Snow Leopard.
Then you could download Lion and upgrade one of the two disks and have two separate versions of the OS
