It's hardly a distraction, as it's so far over on the passenger side of the car. Besides, I turn the brightness down to zero so I can't even see anything.

It's more of a distraction than obstraction. You can't concentrate (full attention) on driving if you have a device you are looking at even once in a while. This will cause a delay in reaction.
