Do you have the latest version? I just got mine the other day and its Version 0.9.5 x86_64 (2011010300)
Also, there presets, and I'm using the one for the iPad.
Per Marge's instructions, I downloaded VLC and kept it and Handbrake in the Applications folder.
My movies I am ripping are on the DVD in the DVD drive.
