"TomTom and Garmin" are *companies*, not *products*. They sell MANY products, some of which are iPhone Apps.
As far as I am aware, no one was writing about buying a stand-alone TomTom or Garmin GPS product. My Garmin stand-alone device, bought several years ago, has been relegated to my wife's mini-van, while I use my iPhone for navigation, dash-mounted, running the TomTom App I described.

I like TomTom, as I said, but at present it does not scale for the iPad. But it *works* fine.
MotionX GPS/GPS Drive are excellent, scale for the iPad screen, but require downloading maps. You can, however, "run your route" ahead of time, and download and cache the relevant maps.
