In order to have this option with an IPhone (and I assume the IPad) you have to have a purchased program like Navagon (currently, the favorite from what I have read on the web).  I think it costs $40 for the app.  Tom Tom also has a popular app, but I think the Navagon is known to be the best.

Particularly if you ask Navigon.

The Android Google GPS vocal guidance is free - and it's terrific.  I have it with my Droid 2.

I wouldn't like to have to continually be downloading Apps. Particularly out in areas where I have no cellular connectivity.
