OK. I just ran a little test. First I put an SD card in my Nikon S9100 and took one picture. For the sake of this discussion we will call it image 1.
I then took the card to my computer and added another image to the same folder as image 1. This image had been taken with the same camera and resized and renamed. The iPad would not recognize it. I then went back to the computer and renamed the image file in the same name format as image 1. Now the iPad recognizes that image.
Next, I went back to the computer and added an additional image that had been taken with a different camera and resized and rename. After renaming that image to image 1 naming format, the iPad recognizes it also. All images are jpg.
My conclusion is that as long as the images are in the same folder as the original camera image and named using the same naming format, the iPad will recognize it.

iPad Camera Connection Kit imports most media files on the camera or SD card, regardless of whether that format is compatible with iPad. If you are unable to view certain images or videos, verify that they are in an iPad compatible format, or import them to your computer for viewing.
Only device-created files are supported. If you copy files from another device or manually edit or rename files on the digital camera or SD card, the iPad may be unable to detect and import these images or videos.
Re: [iPad] Camera Kit and Memory
On photoshop. You can set it to save as WINDOWS or MAC. Maybe the byte order for windows causes issues. On my iPad one a year ago or whatnot we transferred over a bunch of our old travel pics that had been altercropped and straightened using photoshop and or apple iPhoto. Afaik they came across abs are still on the iPad.
