Re: [iPad] books source

I am new to the iPad so please bare with me. I also own a Nook where I get epub books and also get them from the Library for the Nook but I can't get any of these to come up in my iPad. I have solved the problem of the library books but does anyone know if I have to download a special app to be able to read the Barns & Noble books or any book that does not come from ithe iBooks store?
The books that I have come up in iBooks with a plain brown wrapper with the title but will not open. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've been to the Apple store but they had no clue.
Thanks,
Ann in Alabama

I have continued to get Powell's Books ( large used book store in Portland, Or) newsletter ever since my daughter lived in Portland for a year. They give you an independent view on books and I find books I wouldn't otherwise. They now have e books as well so for those interested here is the link to their e books.

And here is the link to the newsletter:

They have interesting interviews with authors and blogs.
