I don't know why, but texting seems bound not only to cellular communication (which that iPad 2 of mine has), but more specificly to the hardware needed for voice communication - that no iPad has.

(Remarkably, my cellular provider has always managed to send me apparent text messages about my receipt and about crossing borders.)

Android devices without "cellular voice" would also be unable to participate in texting.

Fortunately there's e-mail and a slew of social media...

Pat, my iPad does have a cellular plan. Just seems so weird to me that it would be this difficult to text between an iPad and an Android.

I have my iPad set so that I can text using it via my iPhone. Go into settings. messages. Text message forwarding. Turn it on.
