The iPod was introduced in 2002, but sales didn't start to take off until 2005. In 1Q05, it sold about as many units as in all of 2002, 2003, and 2004 put together.
At peak, in 2008 & 2009, Apple was selling about 55,000,000 iPods per year — 22,000,000 in the first quarter of 2009 alone..
