You can enable the "emoji" keyboard and you've then got tons of
emoticons you can use, all for free as part of iOS.
On the iPad, go to Settings app, then General, then tap Keyboard, then
tap Keyboards, then tap Add New Keyboard and then you can add various
other languages but the one you want is called "Emoji" and you may have
to scroll down to see it and select it.
Once you've selected it, whenever you are in an app which uses the
built-in keyboard you will see a new icon in the lower left of the
onscreen keyboard, just to the right of the .?123 button. This new icon
has a picture of a globe, although to me it looks more like a
basketball. Tap it and your Emoji selections will pop up. There will
be a new row of buttons across the bottom, beginning with the Globe (you
tap that to get back to the alpha/numeric keyboard), then a clock (where
you can re-select your most recently used emoticons), then a smiley
face, a flower, a bell, a car, a !?# button and the Space button.
Selecting either the smiley face, flower, bell, car, or !?# buttons
gives you access to all those emoticons, and within each of those
categories you can slide the screen left or right to get to even more
choices.
Enjoy!
