GPS technology (the chipset) has vastly improved since then but there is still a small error. I may be wrong but I think the military specs call for a 1-meter accuracy. I know the civilian specs are more than that.
Most of the improvement in GPS accuracy came when the military turned off the signal "dithering" that made commercial units inaccurate.
Garmin states:
