Hi, Barbara:

There's a third choice - purchase an external hard drive and store all of your back-up items there. Today hard drives in a box with a USB interface are cheap - somewhere around $80 for a Terabyte of storage. Offload your back-ups there and you'll free up a lot of space on your computer's hard drive.

The problem with using Apple's "purchased items" list as your back-up is that, if a vendor or Apple removes an app, you won't be able to download it to your iDevice. Having the item stored locally should allow you to.

Personally, I've yet to be convinced that the cloud is all that useful to me except as a vehicle to share information among my computers and iDevices. Match is nice because it allows us to distribute music among devices as is photo stream for pictures. But we always have a full set of items stored locally.
