The iPod doesn't play movies on the iPad? And for sound well i am baffled.

I tried hooking my iPad mini up to the kitchen TV using the iPod connection. Funny the iPod plays movies on TV but not iPad. I get sound on TV but no picture. I'm on the proper screen too.
