I do file sharing as well as syncing when I plug in.

I even plug in & file-share with iTunes on a PC that I do not sync to.

Also, with multiple devices, I'm often twiddling with content options.
Or, with phone & Touch, just topping off the power w/o taking the time to
sync.

If I didn't want it synced then I wouldn't have plugged it into the laptop
in the first place. Why would I?

IFF you have iTunes set up to take such actions automatically.

MANY people do not, and do not want to.
