Just to answer part of your question, I'm still using iOS 6 on my iPad 2 and I get notices that updates are available but when I go to install the updates they disappear. Some of the updates are for iOS 7 devices only. If it makes you feel any better, I'm still running iOS 4 on my iPod Touch and every single app still functions like it did when new and they haven't had any new updates.

Absurd, it brings to my mind one of Apple's TV Adverts that showed how deprecated hardware does not find place in Microsoft environments with a Windows upgrade. They've emulated that pretty much with Mavericks now.
