No the old items were not deleted last time I did this to my surprise.
It is a cheat and violation of TOS, but in my case an ethical one.
I have bought 5 Kindles: 2 for each of my kids, 1 for my Mom, 1 for me
and 1 for a sibling.
Since my kids are young I did not leave it registered to me since I
have some adult (errrrr "romantic" novels) I did not want them
accidentally getting from the cloud I setup a dedicated account for
each of them and bought their books through those accounts I will call
"Kid 1" and "Kid 2". I wanted my son to be able to read a few
children's books I bought to read aloud to him so I registered it to
me long enough to give him those 3 books. Technically that is a
violation of Amazon TOS but if they were a paper book I could give
them to him after finishing so I did not feel bad.
My Mom and Dad are luddites about the Kindle so they are both on my
account, so actually they both have access to everything I buy (and if
they screw up and accidentally bought a book which happens with new
Kindle users I would get charged, and I have had to remove a few
charges that way). So actually the way Amazon works the 300 books I
have bought for my Kindle can be read by me, Mom or Dad. The reality
is we have such different reading tastes almost all the books I buy
for Mom I never read even though I can pull it from the cloud to mine,
and my Dad's account is only a few weeks old and have not bought him
any books yet and I am unlikely to read what he does. He and I have
almsot no same reading tastes the intersection would be like 10% a
similar ratio to my Moms. Occasionally a book like "Game of Thrones"
series me and my Mom would both read and her being on my account means
I don't have to buy it twice. The same thing that would happen if we
had paper books she would read it then give to me or vice versa. We
would not buy her own set. She never collects books - Paper books she
read and sold them since she reads a ton of fiction and hates clutter.
I am the opposite I have 28 bookshelves of paper books prior to the
Kindle because I re-read many non fiction books and refer to books
frequently for how to advice on business, psychology, etc. and even
re-read some of my favorite fiction every few years.
So I have 5 Kindles with 3 accounts (Kid #1, Kid #2, My account shared
by Mom + Dad, the sibling has their own account I never use or access)
and even if I split off Mom and Dad to their own account so they have
their own cloud and don't see my books (which I may do) since I buy
all their books as gifts I want to own those books if they pass on and
let some other family members (my siblings or relatives) get the
Kindles loaded with their books so the many books I buy for them get
read and enjoyed by someone else.
But I don't think it makes sense to split off their accounts because
both are in their 70's and in the "blink of an eye" years pass fast
when one is busy they may pass on and if I bought them lots of books -
Mom does read a lot I would hate them to be "orphaned" attached to her
account it makes more sense they are lumped in with mine since I buy
them as gifts for her, my Dad the same.
I discovered this when I got my son his Kindle and wanted him to
start off with 6 books of the 300 I owned before I registered it to
his account, I registered it to mine and downloaded 6 books of mine
from the cloud. Then I bought him 8 books so he had 14: 6 of mine and
8 of his. Since I pay for all his books of course I would want his
sister or me to be able to read some one day so that trick may come in
handy. For now its a moot issue I am mostly buying him books I have
already read on paper that I know will suit his taste, and I don't
want to re-read them for the next few years.
