Here is how I stopped my auto-renew on the iPad, using Verizon as the carrier:
I did it 6 days before mynplan was set to auto-renew.

Go settings/cellular data and choose "View Account". Then choose Cancel Plan here:

Then choose "submit" here, with "delete account later" selected.

From what I understand you have to go to the carrier's website, log into your account and then cancel the auto renew.  You can also do it by phone by contacting their billing department.
