Re: [iPad] OT Hurricane Sandy

I'm with you on this.

I have friends on the Jersey Shore and they really got socked.  Before the evac, while the reports were coming in about just how bad this storm was possibly going to be, they stocked up on water, food and batteries.  Heat was covered since they have a gas fireplace.

When the evac order came his wife and 81 year old MIL took off for higher ground, but he had to stay.  Now that it is past, they had damage from a tree now occupying a significan portion of the house, and some water damage.  But he's hanging in their with food, water and heat.  From their reports most of the neighbors also made those kinds of plans and choices and it has worked as well as could be expected.

Oh yeah, he also made sure the car was topped off with gas too.

So there were things that could be done to help minimize the effects of the damage.  Still horrific, but somewhat manageable and gives them the time to fix things up without loss of life or limb.

I feel for those that were in areas thought to be safe that ended up having that world turned upside down.  And I feel somewhat less about those that were in areas that were nearly certain to be hit hard and did nothing about their situation.

The part that always ends up irritating me when tragedies such as these happen is the sob stories from those that had no insurance to minimize the financial hardship, but will be first in line for handouts.

As to the comments about pets and such.  Well you do the best you can for them, but in the end if the choice is protect you and yours OR the pet, the pet has to move way down the list.

Kris,  I found little in your comments that I would disagree with.   Personally,  I am probably leaning toward the "agnostic sympathetical"  side when thinking of this situation back east.  While my feelings don't extend to those who couldn't help their situation,  and there were plenty,   these feelings do extend to the majority of those who we are now hearing from begging for essential supplies like water and food.  I have a hard time understanding why these particular people allowed themselves to be placed in this situation.

They knew for over a week that this approaching storm was a strong possibility… and the chances improved with each day.  If I did not see the need to evacuate completely,  I would have at least made a beeline toward obtaining certain supplies…..  Water:  would have purchased at least a week's worth of water for each individual,  and filled up some cheap 5 gallon buckets with additional tap water for septic service if needed.   I'd have acquired plenty of easily storable food.   With a little fore thought one can get along sufficiently well for weeks and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to do this .    It amazes me how most people do not use forethought in these circumstances…. Which is probably why I hold the  " agnostic sympathetical"  view you mentioned.   I find it difficult to feel sorry for people who will not take care of themselves and their families.     This is not to be construed that I don't feel sorry for those who are unable to take care of themselves.

We live in the Pacific Northwest very close to the Cascadia Subduction Zone and always face the possibility of a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami like the one that occurred in Japan,  so perhaps I am more motivated to be prepared than most,  but I still think that humanity is losing its sense of self preservation and that concerns me a lot!

Human suffering is a part of life. We all deal with death and grief. It's sucks but it's integral to the human experience. I feel for the people in this path. I was in a few hurricanes. A tornado. And ha e experienced deaths of loved ones and of contemporaries. I doubt anyone is denigrating these empathizes amd sympathies. Possibly just focusing attention elsewhere as people deal with trauma in different ways. Some of use feel it hugely. Others deal with it secretly and others are agnostic sympathetically. Can't relate. It's all good. Personally I question the planets ability to nurture 7 billion humans effectively and question whether human life is as valuable as we once thought when we were 100 breeding pairs after that one super volcano
