I have a Kindle, not the touch screen model, and it is a better
experience reading in bright sunlight, and costs a whole lot less so if
someone were to steal it while I was at the beach it wouldn't be that
big a deal. But having said that, I have read a lot in the bright sun
with my iPad and don't find it objectionable at all. Just a bit more of
a nuisance having to angle it so that there isn't glare reflecting back
into my face or on someone else sitting nearby.

I bought one of those screen protectors and installed it when I first
got my iPad (15 months ago) but shortly afterwards took it off since it
significantly changed the clarity of the screen. I have one tiny
scratch that still puzzles me as to how it got there, but that's the
only thing and I really have to search to find it so it's not a big deal
to me.
When I buy the iPad3 I will not be putting a screen protector on it.
