It's the sort of "recipe directions" that get passed down the generations
like "1 of Granny's teacups of sugar" (she made *wonderful* chocolate
pudding.)

Back in college my roommate and I turned it into a verb to use in
cooking, describing how much spice (oregano, rosemary, parsley) to put
into a large pan of spaghetti sauce. When we got through the top of the
pan looked like astroturf before we stirred the spices into the sauce,
so we wrote down in the recipe "astroturf the pan with spices" and it
always tasted great! :-)
