Carolyn,As far as I know the cables that come with the iPod, iPhone & iPad are all the same it is only the power adapters that are different. I would suspect the problem is with the USB ports on your computer not the cord. Some USB ports do not put out enough power to charge the iPad. I have a late 2006 Macbook Pro and I have the same problem. My husband's 2010 iMac does not.Depending on which country your daughter is going to she may run into an issue that the power adapter is not compatible. For example, in the US we have 120V power, in the UK it is 230V so a US power adapter will not work.
