I have misplaced my camera connection kit and after searching everywhere without finding it and being on time pressure to get a group of pictures from my sd card to my iPad for a meeting, I was able to load them onto dropbox on my laptop and them view them on my iPad 1 and transfer them from the dropbox viewer to the "photos" app on my iPad. Hope this is helpful for some others.
