There was an app that provided me with a telephone number to fake-text to and from.
It may have been FreeTone (judging from Purchased, "not on this iPad" and scrolling from the bottom up).

I have my iPad set so that I can text using it via my iPhone. Go into settings. messages. Text message forwarding. Turn it on.
