Thanks so much!  It worked!  I set it on iPhone and sent msg from iPad.  Yay!  Little things can make my day.

Thank you, Jim.  I guess my cellular (Verizon) contract does not include SMS messaging, because my settings/messages did not include the "send as SMS" option.

Since many current PHONE carrier plans include unlimited voice calls and unlimited messaging, and adjust their price only on data and the number of devices, you could try contacting Verizon and asking if SMS texting is available as an option for your iPad plan.
