The iPod didn't thrash MP3 players. I imagine that iPod sales never got close to MP3 players. Maybe they did, I dunno. But iTunes and music distribution that Apple created was the disruption.
Car wise, no matter how you look at it, you need to buy all the same components whether you are Honda, Ford, or Apple, to make a car, there is no way around that. And profits on cars are erratic, low, and have gone through periods of continual and sustained losses. India and China wont help that as they get themselves up to speed with safety, and make cheaper cars. Here, we have a Great Wall, its a truck, as you Americans call it. Its cheaper, complies with our heavy safety standards, albeit it would be lower quality.
Apple might have sold more iPods, but it clips the ticket on every music purchase ongoing. The car can't do that. but you can sell every car with an Apple Carplay and self drive software box instead. This way you make money on every car

So did the music MP3 player makers thought before iPod thrashed them.
The whole ball game is software and design.
The software is all algorithms.

I see electronics as very minor in a car. Chassis, drivetrain, suspension, safety, engine, body. These are the main factors in any car.The electronics these days are small circuit boards for the dash etc, and the self drive will be a tiny box, a computer. Sensors. All of these are small physically and not costlySelf drive exists now, its easy, very easy. Its sensors, GPS, map system. BUT, and its a very big but, its about safety. While the number of accidents and deaths will be massively higher for human controlled vehicles. ONE by a self drive car will put the industry on the back foot. the key IMO, is redundancy. When this and that fails, what happens? Car slows down, pulls over, something to allay safety fears. And the driver has to be in the drivers seat, with a steering wheel, legally.

Are yes by the time I owned a Sinclair it was called a karmic Sinclair. Good times. Thanks for the memories.
I still see how the future of automotive is with computers not with mechanics. I think that is the angle up was going for. But again my guess is just a guess. I'm not the guys with teams of researchers and advisers and billions of dollars in the warchest. I'm just a dude. Chances are those really expensive advisers know more than I do. But that's just me~KLM\\ "Antisocial behavior is a trait of intelligence in a world full of conformists" ~Nikola Tesla //If one reads history the it can be found that a pioneer in home computers in UK, Sir Clive Sinclair, started working on a transportation device, after having launched a very successful computation device. This was in 1980s.Perhaps computation and conveyance devices have some link. One makes imagination /mind move around and the other body move around.
BestPKSPeople who are well more versed can answer that. I'm not alone management. But experts and Apple thinkThey can make gobs of money doing this. I'm too uneducated to argue. They know best. I do not. I just read the rumors and the experts and give myOpinion which is to agree with the experts. I get that you disagree with the experts in their field. I just happen to not.~KLM\\ "Antisocial behavior is a trait of intelligence in a world full of conformists" ~Nikola Tesla //
