My son has an iPad 3, and mine is an iPad 4. In my home, I have two wifi networks with routers in the same room. One, OLOK, is a local ISP with a 2007 Apple AirPort Extreme. The other ISP is AT&T with a 2015 Pace 411N router from AT&T. Both are 802.11n routers, but the AT&T network provides roughly 1.5-2x the download speeds of the OLOK/Apple.
Both iPads function on wifi well from both networks in my living room. Both have difficulty and lose most or all wifi signal in my son's room past 1-2 additional walls, where, of course, my wishes to work.
My son's mom said she had a similar distance problem with his iPad 3 at her house and solved it by installing an inexpensive Linksys wifi router in addition to her AT&T router. I tried this approach several years ago on the OLOK/Apple network, using an older Apple Airport Express but was never able to link the two Apple routers to extend the network successfully.
Let's discuss extending the OLOK/Apple network. What would you suggest as the best way to try and provide a solid wifi signal to the more distant rooms? As my current Apple router is ~8-9 years old, is there any value in purchasing the current Apple AirPort Extreme as a standalone unit, or perhaps to use one plus my current Airport to extend the network?
