My device was discounted up front, but I paid it off through the 2-year contract.  So it was actually a time payment situation.  Anyhow, I will definitely check out buying my new iPhone up front IF ATT doesn't charge me the same for service as people who are doing a time payment (NEXT.)

Then again I read somewhere that ATT is changing plans again and will not offer service to those who buy their phones directly from Apple.  The whole business is ridiculously complicated.  Very, very annoying.

I will check out ting.com.  Thanks for the tip.

Cathy

You got a discounted device. Next time go full retail for a better experience. And also look at ting.com

When the 2 years is up, my contract obligation is over and my phone is paid. If I keep my (fully paid) phone after two years, I do NOT pay any less for service only than I did while I was paying off the phone. To me, that's double dipping.
